Barley seedling emergence and residues - R009

Comparison of three no-tillage opener types in promoting barley seedling emergence from a wet soil, with and without surface residues. Personnel: Dr A.D. Chaudhry, Dr C. J. Baker & Dr J.A. Springett, Massey University & AgResearch, New Zealand. Ref. Proc. Agron. Soc. NZ., 17, 59-66 Equipment: CROSS SLOT® opener, Hoe opener, Double disc opener. Conclusions: The CROSS SLOT®opener promoted the greatest seedling emergence (73%) of all options when surface residues were present. The double disc opener promoted the least seedling emergence (26%) of all treatments. Both the CROSS SLOT®and hoe openers responded favourably to the presence of surface residues, increasing their emergence counts from 44% to 73% and 33% to 64% respectively. The double disc opener had virtually no response to the presence of surface residues.
