Causes of dry soil emergence failure - R011

Comparison of seed and seedling performance in dry soils with three different no-tillage openers. Personnel: Dr M.A.Choudhary & Dr C. J. Baker (1979-1985) Massey University, NZ. Ref. No-Tillage Seeding: Science and Practice, pg. 68 Equipment: CROSS SLOT® openers, hoe opener, double disc opener.. Conclusions: CROSS SLOT® openers produced better total seedling emergence from dry soils than either of the other two openers. Seeds germinated and survived beneath the soil well. With double disc openers, seeds germinated reasonably well but died from desiccation before emerging from the soil. With hoe openers most seeds did not germinate, but those that did, survived reasonably well until emergence. The loss of soil humidity from the slot zone was lowest with CROSS SLOT® openers, highest with double disc openers, and intermediate with hoe openers.
